The APY Lands cover roughly 103,000 square km, with a population of approx. 3,000 Anangu people. The region is freehold land controlled by the Anangu people.

Your New Career

Nganampa Health Council now has an exciting opportunity for a full-time, Outreach Midwife/Women's Health Nurse to join their dedicated team.

In this role, you will deliver outreach midwifery services and women’s health care at Nganampa Health Council (NHC) clinics on the APY Lands, providing clinical assistance, supervision and guidance to clinical staff.

Working under the direction of the Medical Director and Clinical Services Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Prioritising service delivery of antenatal and postnatal care, other women’s health care and education;
  • Undertaking cervix screening activities;
  • Assisting in the coordination of the bi-annual breast screen and regular gynaecologist visits;
  • Providing orientation, clinical education, up-skilling, mentoring and support to midwives, RN's and Aboriginal Health Workers (AHW) working at NHC clinics on the APY Lands; and
  • Promoting the delivery of Primary Health Care and the involvement of Anangu Health Workers in all aspects of women’s health care.

This position requires a candidate who is comfortable with regular and extensive travel alone across the APY Lands assisting staff with women’s checks, postnatal care, and other women’s health services.

To be considered, you must be a Registered Nurse and Midwife, and be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, combined with recent experience in the delivery of antenatal, postnatal, and other women’s health care in a cross-cultural context.

The ideal candidate will currently hold or be in the process of acquiring a Women’s Health (i.e. Family Planning) or Post Graduate Public Health qualification and have experience within the public health or primary health care sector, particularly in the delivery of health education/ health promotion programs and extensive midwifery and gynaecological experience. Previous experience working within a remote area Indigenous Health service would be advantageous.

Nganampa Health Council is seeking an adaptable and flexible individual who can display the initiative, discretion and cultural sensitivity needed to support and drive the organisation's objectives and values. The ability to communicate and participate effectively within a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary health team will be required, as will a demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health, the principles of Primary Health Care and relevant legislation.

Candidates should also be comfortable working under Aboriginal management and control. If you're open to change, accepting of Aboriginal people, comfortable living in a remote environment and are willing to learn the ways of the people, you'll be well suited to this position.

No two days will be the same and as a result, highly resourceful candidates will thrive here! 

If successful you must be willing to comply with NHC’s immunisation requirements and undergo a Police Check and a Working With Children Check. A manual driver's licence is essential and it would be advantageous to have experience with 4WD vehicles, although a 2-day 4WD training course is provided in your orientation week.
