About Nganampa Health Council

Nganampa Health Council is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation operating on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far north west of South Australia. Across this area, NHC operates seven clinics, the Tjilpi Pampaku Ngura Aged Care facility and assorted health related programs including aged care, sexual health, environmental health, health worker training, dental, women’s health, male health, children’s health, immunisation, eye health and mental health.

Widely recognised as being an exemplary Aboriginal health service, they have sustained a national reputation for best practice clinical services and leading edge collaborative program research and development. Their successes include significantly reducing the rates of sexually transmitted infections, increasing birth weights through their antenatal program, consistently keeping childhood immunisation rates at over 90% (some years at 100%), and providing high quality residential and respite aged care at their Tjilpiku Pampaku Ngura aged care facility.

About the Opportunity

Nganampa Health Council now has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Registered Nurse/Chronic Disease Project Officer to join their dedicated team on a FIFO basis in the APY Lands, SA.

This role will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing a new project on the identification and clinical management of children and adolescents on the APY Lands who are obese and/or have Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (DM2). The project will eventually progress to include primary prevention activities aimed at children in the target group and their families.

Your role and responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Delivering clinical care and case management to this group of children and adolescents;
  • Developing and improving NHC screening, assessment and management processes, applicable in the remote clinical setting, for childhood obesity and DM2;
  • Involving expert clinicians in this field to provide advice and direction for the project;
  • Working with visiting specialist teams and NHC clinical staff to improve and coordinate screening processes and offer a comprehensive assessment to children with obesity and/or DM2;
  • Engaging with children and families to deliver health promotion messages; and
  • Collaborating with other internal and external providers to drive the project.

Over the course of a calendar year, you will be required to spend a substantial amount of time delivering patient care on the APY Lands, operating on an organisational needs basis with no set monthly FIFO structure.

FIFO & COVID-19 Update: Under current COVID guidelines and FIFO arrangements, NHC will meet the costs associated with candidate travel on the way in, including quarantining in Alice Springs, however on the way home, you will be required to meet those costs if any, yourself. Please note that your time quarantining in Alice Springs will not count towards time on the APY Lands.

At Nganampa Health Council, our people are our greatest strength.

To be considered for this role, you must be a Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration and a strong background in remote health delivery. You will also need to hold some paediatric experience and a good understanding of chronic disease principles, particularly in regards to diabetes care in youth. A post-graduate qualification in Chronic Disease Management or Public Health is desirable.

Importantly, you must be able to demonstrate your ability to apply the above knowledge. Working experience within the Public/Primary Health sectors, particularly in the delivery of chronic disease and diabetes care would be advantageous.

Nganampa Health Council is seeking an adaptable individual to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team in a cross-cultural environment. The ability to demonstrate cultural awareness and work under Aboriginal management and control will be essential, as will a commitment to the transfer of health skills to local Anangu health workers and clients.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a genuine desire to perform clinical work and a passion for working with children. You must be able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to work autonomously under minimum supervision. The role will require you to think creatively, so a strong sense of innovation will serve you well.

Please Note: If successful you must be willing to comply with NHC’s immunisation requirements and undergo a Police Check and a Working With Children Check. A manual driver's licence is essential and it would be advantageous to have experience with 4WD vehicles, although a 2-day 4WD training course is available during orientation.
